KAROO ALOE · About

We write about
skincare the way
you would read a label.

One product, one report, and no sentence that the jar cannot back up. Here is how that is put together, and who pays for it.

Last updated 27 October 2026

The Karoo is the semi-arid plateau that covers most of this country’s interior: thin soil, hard light, and rain that arrives on its own schedule. It is the kind of place that produced Aloe ferox and a great many of its relatives. The rest of the name is the plant. Between them they describe the job — look first at where a cosmetic ingredient actually comes from, then at what the jar on the shelf can honestly do with it. Unexcited, specific, and difficult to sell to.

What this site is

KAROO ALOE is an independent South African publisher. We take one widely sold skincare item at a time, read everything printed on and around it, work out what it costs per use rather than per jar, and publish a single long report. We do not run a shop, we do not hold stock, and we have never handled anybody's order.

How a product gets chosen

  • It is cheap enough that a wrong answer costs a reader under R300.
  • It is sold widely in South Africa, through a marketplace a reader already uses.
  • It makes a claim that can be checked against something other than its own packaging.
  • It is a cosmetic. We do not write about medicines, devices or anything that requires a prescription.

What we check before publishing

  1. The listing itself — price, pack size, seller, stated classification, returns policy, and the date each of those was read.
  2. The claims — who produced each number on the artwork, and whether anyone independent has published it. Where the answer is the manufacturer's own laboratory, we say so in the report rather than in a footnote.
  3. The arithmetic — cost per use, how long a pack lasts at a realistic frequency, and the annual figure, which is usually the one that changes a reader's mind.
  4. The ceiling — the most generous honest description of what the product can do, and the first thing it cannot.

What we will not do

We do not give medical advice, we do not diagnose anything, and we do not describe a cosmetic as a treatment. We do not publish invented reviews, invented testers or invented laboratory results, and no report on this site is written to a brief supplied by a brand or a seller. If a product is mediocre, the report says so and the affiliate link stays in place anyway.

How it is paid for

Through affiliate commission on Takealot links, disclosed at the top of every page and explained in full on the disclosure page. Commission does not change what a reader pays, and it has no influence on what a report concludes — the verdict section of Report 01 is four arguments against the product we are linking to.

Corrections

Prices move, sellers change, and listings are edited without notice. If something here is out of date or wrong, tell us and we will correct it and date the correction. We would rather be corrected by a reader than quoted by a search engine.
